AI tools for kids: compare access, learning value, and safety

No general-purpose AI tool is automatically safe for children. Choose one narrow learning task, confirm the provider’s current age rules, remove private data, and stay involved from the first prompt through the final fact-check.

A practical family comparison

Read the family verdict first, then check access and limits. The best option is the one that fits a specific learning task with the least account and data risk.

ChatGPT

Useful task

Brainstorm questions, compare explanations, or run a fact-checking exercise.

Access and controls

OpenAI says ChatGPT is not intended for under 13; ages 13–18 require parental consent. Under-13 educational interaction must be adult-conducted. Linked teen accounts support selected settings and quiet hours, but parents cannot read conversations through parental controls.

Adult-operated for under 13. Use structured, supervised tasks for eligible teens.

Microsoft Copilot

Useful task

Research starting points, cited answers, drafts, and image ideas.

Access and controls

Microsoft says generally 18+, with access expanded to ages 13–18 subject to regional minimums. Family Safety and device controls can block access or set limits; availability varies.

For eligible teens with an adult-defined task and independent source checking.

Google Gemini

Useful task

Explain a topic, brainstorm, compare drafts, or explore images with adult review.

Access and controls

Availability varies. Google documents supervised access for some under-13 accounts when a parent enables it through Family Link. Google warns that filters are not perfect.

Use only when the child’s account is eligible and Family Link is configured.

Teachable Machine

Useful task

Train a small image, sound, or pose classifier and inspect prediction confidence.

Access and limits

Use as an adult-guided browser experiment. Avoid faces, voices, names, and identifiable backgrounds; use objects, drawings, or adult-created samples.

Excellent for understanding training examples without a chatbot.

Scratch

Useful task

Build an interactive explanation, decision tree, game, or model interface.

Access and limits

MIT says Scratch is designed especially for ages 8–16 and used by all ages. Online sharing includes profiles, comments, and community participation.

A strong first creation tool when privacy and public sharing are managed.
Important distinction: provider protections reduce some risks; they do not replace adult judgment. Never use a chatbot as a therapist, secret-keeper, medical authority, disciplinary tool, or substitute for a trusted adult.
A 20-minute family routine

Use an AI tool with a beginning, middle, and end

1ChoosePick one public, age-appropriate question and define the desired format.
2ProtectRemove names, faces, school details, locations, accounts, and private files.
3AskHave the adult operate the account when provider rules require it.
4CheckVerify at least two factual claims using authoritative sources.
5ReflectRecord what was useful, wrong, uncertain, and changed by a person.

Good first task

“Explain three ways a bee helps an ecosystem in a table for a 10-year-old. Mark anything you are uncertain about.”

Then verify each claim with a university, museum, or government science source.

Task to avoid

“Here is my child’s school report and full history. Tell me what is wrong and create a diagnosis.”

This shares private information and asks an AI system to make a high-stakes judgment it should not make.
