Is ChatGPT safe for kids? A parent’s practical answer

ChatGPT can support learning, but it is not risk-free or intended for unsupervised use by younger children. OpenAI says it is not meant for children under 13; educational interaction for children under 13 must be conducted by an adult. Ages 13–18 require parental consent.

What OpenAI’s current guidance means for families

Under 13

Provider guidance

ChatGPT is not meant for children under 13. In an education context, the actual interaction must be conducted by an adult.

Practical family approach

The adult types, chooses safe inputs, reads the output first, and guides a short shared discussion.

Use an adult-led demonstration, or choose an offline activity instead.

Ages 13–18

Provider guidance

OpenAI requires parental or guardian consent before use.

Practical family approach

Link accounts where appropriate, review settings together, set quiet hours, and agree on safe tasks and data boundaries.

Parent consent and ongoing conversation remain necessary.

Any age

Known limitation

ChatGPT can generate inaccurate, invented, biased, or age-inappropriate output.

Practical family approach

Do not use it as the final authority for health, safety, legal, financial, or personal-crisis decisions.

Treat output as a draft to evaluate, not an answer to obey.
What linked controls do

Useful settings with important limits

Manage features

Parents can

Manage selected options such as model training, memory, voice, image generation, sensitive-content reduction, location, and quiet hours.

Controls do not

Guarantee that every response is correct, appropriate, or aligned with family values.

Link accounts

Parents can

Connect one parent or guardian account with a teen account and receive notice if the teen unlinks.

Controls do not

Provide ordinary access to the teen’s conversations or real-time monitoring.

Safety notifications

Parents may receive

Limited alerts in certain serious self-harm situations when systems and trained reviewers detect possible acute risk.

Notifications do not

Replace professional care, emergency services, or direct family attention.

Settings can change. Review the linked OpenAI parental-controls page inside the account before relying on any feature.

Set purpose
Parent says

“We are using ChatGPT to generate three quiz questions about the water cycle.”

Child records

What a useful answer should contain.

Stop if

The task shifts into private, risky, or unrelated advice.

Protect data
Parent checks

No names, school details, location, schedule, health information, private images, or passwords.

Child practices

Replacing a real person with a fictional example.

Stop if

The tool asks for information that is not needed for the learning goal.

Test output
Parent asks

“Which question could be wrong or misleading?”

Child verifies

One claim with a textbook, trusted website, or primary source.

Stop if

A citation cannot be found or the answer encourages unsafe action.

Close and reflect
Parent asks

“What did you decide that the tool could not decide for you?”

Child explains

One useful result, one limitation, and one change they made.

Finish with

An offline action: answer the quiz, draw a diagram, or explain the topic aloud.

Do not delegate these decisions

Keep high-impact help with trusted people

ChatGPT can organize questions or explain general concepts, but a child should not rely on it for emergencies, diagnosis, therapy, abuse disclosure, legal advice, financial decisions, or secret conversations.
