ChatGPT Study Mode is a learning aid, not a guaranteed tutor. It can ask questions and explain steps, but it can still make mistakes or provide a direct answer. If Memory is enabled, saved memories and past chats may influence personalization. Teens should verify claims and follow school AI rules.

Parent setup checklist
- Confirm the teen is eligible under current provider terms and has parent or guardian permission.
- Review linked parental controls, training/data settings, Memory, voice, image generation, and quiet hours together.
- Agree that names, school identifiers, schedules, addresses, private messages, health details, and personal photos stay out of prompts.
- Choose a narrow learning goal and a 30-minute stopping point.
- Read the teacher’s AI policy. Decide how the teen will disclose allowed AI help.
- Keep a textbook, class notes, or a trusted primary source ready for verification.
Controls are not monitoring software. They can manage selected settings but do not make every response accurate or give parents routine access to every conversation.

1. Define
Teen writes

Parent checks
The goal is understanding, not completing a graded answer.
2. Attempt

Evidence
Answer a new practice question independently.
Homework disclosure example: “I used ChatGPT Study Mode to generate practice questions and explain one step. I checked the explanation against [source] and wrote the submitted response myself.” Follow the teacher’s required format.
Boundaries
Know when to stop and involve a person
Private or high-impact
Do not use it for crisis, medical, legal, financial, abuse, or disciplinary decisions. Contact a trusted adult or qualified professional.
Emotional reliance
Pause if the teen prefers secret AI conversations over trusted people, feels pressured to obey the tool, or becomes distressed. AI-generated empathy is not a human relationship.
Parent prompt: “What did you verify outside the chat, and what did you decide for yourself?”
Teen reflection: “Could I now solve or explain this without Study Mode?”
